About Us

In 2002, minding my own business at the World Oceans Conference in Santa Barbara, I heard Captain Charles Moore give a talk on the buildup of plastic debris in our oceans.

What I heard floored me. So began my lifelong fascination with plastic.

According to Moore’s research, ocean surface waters around the world contain 6 times more plastic than plankton. Why? Because plastic, a petroleum based product, is completely non-biodegradable. And much of our disposable plastic crap winds its way to the ocean……

It’s a monumental issue. Around the world, countries have taxed or outright banned disposable plastics. Yet still our packaging appetite rages. Just stand outside any market or cafe, and watch the parade of plastic bags etc. flow through - so much of which could be avoided by our thinking ahead: bring your own!

The larger goal for this project is to inspire thoughts about living lightly - lessening our impact just a little. If you can make the switch to bring your own, try the next lifestyle challenge - eating organic, riding your bike to work, fueling your petroguzzler on biodiesel.....
